Brilliant Brussels flower carpet 2024: Dahlias compete to bloom
Recently, more than 20,000 visitors had the opportunity to witness one of Belgium’s most unique artistic creations: the spectacular flower carpet, consisting of more than half a million dahlias at the Grand Place in Brussels. The event held from August 15 to 18, 2024 has attracted the attention of tourists from all over the world.
Despite facing scorching heat on the first day and sudden showers, the Flower Carpet still maintained its brilliant beauty. According to organizers, this year’s choice of dahlias—rather than traditional begonias—highlighted their exceptional durability. For the first time in more than 50 years, the display will primarily feature dahlias, marking a significant change from tradition.
One of the highlights of visiting the Flower Carpet is the panoramic view from the balcony of Brussels City Hall. For just 8 euros, visitors can admire this living work of art, crafted by skilled gardeners. The panoramic view offers a breathtaking view of the intricate floral patterns and vibrant colors.
The Brussels flower carpet is not only a major cultural event but also a symbol of the city. Last year, the Brussels city government officially applied to UNESCO to recognize this event as an intangible cultural heritage. If successful, this recognition will be an important milestone, affirming the cultural and artistic value of the Flower Carpet in the international arena.
While waiting for UNESCO’s decision, expected at the end of 2025, we are already preparing for the next epic flower festival. “Flower season” scheduled to take place in August 2025 will have flower exhibitions displayed in both City Hall and Grand Place, promising visitors new and exciting experiences.
The Brussels flower carpet is more than just an artistic display; it shows the Belgian people’s love of nature and art. This event continues to enrich the cultural life of Brussels and attract large numbers of tourists, demonstrating the city’s dedication to both artistic expression and natural beauty.
