Khaleesi Sherbrooke: The New Furry Mayor of Cormorant Village, Minnesota
Khaleesi Sherbrooke, a 3-year-old Great Pyrenees, has won the hearts of Cormorant Village residents and beyond, securing a landslide victory in the town’s 2024 mayoral election with 103,000 votes. This election marks the revival of a unique tradition in Cormorant Village, where pets run for the honorary position of mayor.
A Unique Tradition
The tradition began in 2015 when the town decided to elect a mayor as a fun way to raise funds for their annual summer festival, Cormorant Daze. Surprisingly, the first elected mayor was Duke, another Great Pyrenees, who charmed the town and held the position until his retirement in 2018. After Duke’s passing in 2019, the tradition paused, partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
2024 Election
With political attention high due to national elections, the town decided to bring back the Animal Mayor Election. Nominations were accepted between Memorial Day and the Fourth of July, with the top candidates announced shortly after. Khaleesi faced stiff competition from Ollie Einerson, a Golden Retriever mix, and Theodore H. Rosten, a Bassett Hound. Voting took place from July 15 to August 5, and the election was open to the public via social media, leading to Khaleesi’s overwhelming victory.
Khaleesi’s Background
Khaleesi, named after the “Game of Thrones” character, is a relatively new resident of Cormorant Village, having moved there in spring 2024 with her owners, David and Julie Sherbrooke. Her friendly demeanor and popularity, bolstered by extensive campaigning, played a crucial role in her election success. Weighing in at 140 pounds, Khaleesi is not only the town’s second mayor but also its first female mayor.
Duties as Mayor
Khaleesi will be officially sworn in during the 13th Annual Cormorant Daze Festival. Her responsibilities will include representing the town at various events, including parades, and participating in fundraising activities, particularly for the local humane society.
Khaleesi’s election continues a beloved tradition in Cormorant Village, bringing joy and community spirit to this small Minnesota town.
