Located in the Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, Phraya Nakhon Cave was discovered by a local about 200 years ago. With its enchanting natural beauty, Phraya Nakhon Cave attracted the attention of the Thai Royal Family in 1890. To honor this place, the gilded Kuha Kharuehat Temple was built on a mound of land right below the sinkhole in the cave, as a resting place for King Rama V. Since then, Kings Rama VII and IX have also visited this place, further affirming the cultural and historical value of Phraya Nakhon Cave.
Today, Phraya Nakhon Cave is open to visitors, but to enjoy the mysterious beauty of this place, you will need to overcome a difficult journey. According to information from the It’s Better in Thailand website, to get to the cave, visitors can rent a boat to Laem Sala beach, with prices ranging from 150 to 200 Baht (about $5) per person. Then, you need to walk about 30 minutes through the hilly road to the beach. From Laem Sala, a steep and rocky trail will take you another 430 meters to the cave entrance.
At Laem Sala Beach, visitors can stop at rustic restaurants to enjoy local cuisine after exploring the cave. Don’t forget to buy a national park ticket for 200 Baht before starting the trip. The climb to the cave entrance can be quite strenuous, so save your energy and take your time.
A large sinkhole acts as a skylight, keeping light and fresh air inside.
Near the cave entrance, you will encounter a steep path leading into the cave, where there is a large sinkhole that acts as a skylight, maintaining light and fresh air inside. For the best experience, visit the cave during the dry season from December to May. Phraya Nakhon Cave is open from 6:30 am to 6 pm daily, and is an ideal destination for a half-day tour. After that, you can continue to explore Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park, Monkey Island, and Bang Pu Fishing Village to complete your journey.
