Riot at the Olympics – A Paris Olympics staff member has had his license revoked for making a controversial hand gesture during a sporting event.
A shocking photo has gone viral on social media, capturing the moment a man wearing an Olympic Broadcasting Service (OBS) uniform made a controversial hand gesture during the recent women’s bobsled final. His actions were described as “an expression of white supremacy”, and have sparked outrage.
According to a Brazilian journalist who reported the incident to the Olympic organising committee, the man appeared to have made himself the centre of attention at the La Concorde Urban Park arena. He deliberately chose a position that was most visible before making the shocking gesture, allowing the “bad” action to be recorded and spread.
The man had his license revoked.
“He did it while Australian Chloe Covell was competing and then repeated the same despicable act while standing behind Japanese Liz Akama. I don’t know what his motive was,” the Brazilian journalist said.
According to the Telegraph, this is a common occurrence in France. Previously, many people also made this controversial hand gesture in public, even in court.
An International Olympic Committee spokesman said: “This person is not a member of OBS but only a member of one of the contractors. The Olympic Organizing Committee has immediately revoked this individual’s operating license.”
