Renting a Billboard to Find a Partner
Frustrated with dating apps, David Cline decided to introduce himself in a unique way: by renting a large billboard.
While driving with a friend in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Tara suddenly spotted an unusual billboard. The image featured a man with long hair, glasses, giving a thumbs-up, and a cat lying beside him. The billboard read, “Dave is single. Want to date Dave? Message him on Instagram @Date_Dave_Philly.”
Tara found the idea both humorous and brave. She decided to send a message to Dave to give it a try.
David Cline, who appeared on the billboard, is one of many singles looking for love through unconventional methods rather than dating apps. While many are experiencing disappointment with dating apps, David believes that meeting in person holds much greater value.
Earlier this year, an older single person in Texas also rented a billboard with a similar goal. In San Francisco, singles have distributed flyers about themselves throughout the city, and running groups have been utilized as opportunities for first dates. At 28, David feels that dating apps don’t cater well to those who might not have standout appearances. He chose to use a billboard to present himself.
David mentioned that while not everyone needs to rent a billboard, self-promotion is important. His creative approach made a strong impression on many, including Tara. She reached out via Instagram and is also actively expanding her social network by attending dance classes and community meetings in Philadelphia.
Jeff Guenther, author of the book “Dating Energy: How to Have a Long-Term Relationship Through the Journey of Self-Discovery,” notes that dating apps are becoming less appealing as they only generate dopamine to keep users engaged. Jeff believes that connecting with people in real life is the best way to find a lasting relationship.
David, who enjoys Pokémon card club gatherings, encourages singles to join local clubs like cycling or card games to meet new people. Since renting the billboard, David has received numerous messages from around the world, including some from people in the Philippines who mistook Philadelphia for the Philippines.
Along with dating proposals, David has also received thanks from people who felt uplifted after seeing his billboard. Despite some negative comments, David plans to take down the billboard next weekend as he has met a girlfriend named Tara, whom he finds kind and humorous.
Tara and David had a pleasant first date and plan to meet again to enjoy a comedy show together.
