SZA, the soulful artist from Maplewood, New Jersey, joined Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) nearly a year ago, marking a significant milestone in her career. Since then, she has released an album, toured extensively, and shared the stage with her TDE labelmates.
Reflecting on her journey during an interview with Complex TV, SZA opened up about her modest beginnings.“When I first started, I was bartending and trying to pay for studio time,” she revealed. “But it really wasn’t a studio—it was my homeboy’s closet. It’s weird ’cause I wonder if people would relate.”
The Inspiration Behind Her Lyrics
SZA delved into the meaning behind some of her lyrics, particularly the track “Omega” from her album Z. She explained how the song reflects her experiences growing up in a household with parents of differing religious beliefs—her mother is Christian, and her father is Muslim.
“I hope my music isn’t cryptic because it doesn’t seem cryptic to me,” she said. “Most of it has to do with re-thinking my childhood. ‘Omega’ grapples with my mom being Christian and my dad being Muslim, so it’s like, ‘Let the church say Amen / release all my sins at the pulpit / it’s my beginning…’ But then I say, ‘Y’all lie, I don’t lie.’” This introspective approach allows SZA to connect deeply with listeners who share similar struggles of identity and faith.
Lauryn Hill’s Influence and Staying True to Herself
A significant influence on SZA’s artistry is Lauryn Hill, whose music and message continue to inspire her. SZA emphasized the importance of authenticity, asserting that she doesn’t intend to change her music to fit fans’ expectations.
Working on Her Fourth Project: “A”
SZA also confirmed she’s working on her fourth project, titled “A”, completing the sequence of her name’s acronym with her earlier releases, S and Z. Additionally, she revealed plans to direct short films in collaboration with her Z album, expanding her creative vision beyond music.
With her distinctive blend of vulnerability and boldness, SZA continues to solidify her place as a groundbreaking artist. Fans eagerly await the release of “A” and the artistic evolution it promises.
