Britney Spears may soon be finishing her child support payments for her teenage sons with ex-husband Kevin Federline, but her financial commitments might still continue. As her sons reach adulthood, legal and voluntary responsibilities, such as education expenses, could keep Spears involved in covering specific costs. Despite closing a significant chapter in their co-parenting arrangement, Federline and Spears remain supportive of their sons’ decisions regarding family relationships and future plans.
Child Support Payments Nearing Completion
Britney Spears is set to finish paying child support for her two teenage sons, but her financial obligations might not end there. According to Mark Vincent Kaplan, attorney for Kevin Federline, Spears may still be responsible for certain expenses beyond the standard child support.
“I believe under the terms of the judgment, there will still be some obligations to contribute to certain expenses,” Kaplan stated. “While regular, periodic child support payments will stop, [there] may be other expenses she voluntarily agrees to cover under specific categories, even after they reach adulthood.”
Kaplan did not elaborate on the specifics of the agreement between Federline and Spears but noted that college education is an example of expenses the pop star might still be expected to fund.
Britney and Kevin’s Co-Parenting Agreement
Spears and Federline, who divorced in 2007, share two sons: Sean Preston, 19, and Jayden James, 18. Federline, a former DJ, had been receiving $40,000 per month in child support from Spears until their eldest turned 18 in September 2023. Afterward, they agreed to reduce the payments to $20,000 monthly for Jayden until he reached adulthood.
However, as Jayden turned 18 on September 12, child support payments under California law will cease once he graduates from high school — though not later than his 19th birthday, Kaplan previously explained.
Jayden is expected to graduate soon in Hawaii, where he has been living with his father, older brother Preston, and Federline’s other children since August 2023.
Federline’s Perspective
When asked about Federline’s view on Spears no longer paying child support, Kaplan shared that his client is “grateful that Britney has supported their kids all this time.”
The family law attorney, who has represented Federline since the start of his custody battle with Spears, also revealed that Federline “knows” Jayden plans to visit his mother in Los Angeles.
“He’s very close to all his kids,” Kaplan said, adding, “If the boys feel comfortable improving their relationship with their mother, Kevin fully supports that.”
Kaplan concluded, “Both of these young men are now adults. Kevin supports them making their own decisions and doing what they feel is best for themselves.”
