The Dallas Cowboys and the New York Yankees rank among the highest-valued sports teams worldwide. Sports represent a significant revenue-generating industry globally, and in Colombia, the industry has created around 1,600 jobs and contributed nearly $4 billion USD to the GDP in recent years.
Like any business, sports teams hold assets, liabilities, and equity; however, the most valued factor is the overall worth of the franchise. Below is a list of the world’s most valuable sports teams.
Leading the list is the Dallas Cowboys, an NFL team valued at $9 billion. Since 1989, the team has been owned by Jerry Jones, who acquired it for $150 million at the time.
In second place is the New York Yankees, valued at $7.1 billion. This iconic baseball team, which recently lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series final, is owned by the Steinbrenner family.
Tied for third place are the Golden State Warriors from the NBA and the New England Patriots from the NFL, both valued at $7 billion each.
Following these are four additional NFL teams. The Los Angeles Rams rank fourth, owned by E. Stanley Kroenke and valued at $6.9 billion. Then, New York Giants rank fifth with $6.8 billion, Chicago Bears rank sixth with $6.3 billion, and Las Vegas Raiders come in seventh with $6.1 billion.
Tied in eighth place, with a valuation of $6.1 billion, are two New York teams: the New York Knicks of the NBA and the New York Jets of the NFL.
In ninth place is Real Madrid, the only European team in the top 10, valued at $6.07 billion. Unlike the American teams, Real Madrid does not have a single owner; it is owned collectively by its 93,920 members.
Rounding out the top 10 is the Washington Commanders, another NFL team valued at $6.05 billion, currently owned by Joshua Harris.
In the top 20 teams, only four are outside American football, including Manchester United (ranked 11th), valued at $6 billion; the Los Angeles Lakers (ranked 13th), with $5.9 billion; FC Barcelona (ranked 16th), valued at $5.508 billion; and Liverpool, valued at $5.288 billion.
Among the 50 highest-valued teams globally, 30 are from American professional football leagues. The total value of these 50 teams reaches $256 billion, with an average value of around $5.12 billion per team.
