Shawn Mendes has opened up about his split from Camila Cabello, revealing that he would still call the singer “first” if he found himself in a crisis, as she remains “one of his closest best friends.”
In an interview with the New York Times, Shawn Mendes expressed his frustration over rumors suggesting that he and Camila Cabello are “against each other in a weird way.” He emphasized the significance of their bond, stating, “I have nerves just even speaking about it, just what people would say. But honestly, if something was to happen in my family and if something was to happen to me, she’d probably be the first person I call, to this day. Our relationship is teaching me what love means, in a big way.”
Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello were in a relationship for two years before splitting in November 2021. Their romance was heavily scrutinized by the public, especially after they shared a video of their kiss online, which later attracted criticism amid Shawn’s brief connection with Sabrina Carpenter. The dynamics of this relationship were explored in Sabrina’s latest album, Short ‘N Sweet.
Reflecting on his personal life, Shawn Mendes has recently been candid about navigating his sexuality, which has long been a topic of speculation among fans. He stated on stage, “The real truth about my life and my sexuality is that, man, I’m just figuring it out like everyone. I don’t really know sometimes and I know other times. And it feels really scary because we live in a society that has a lot to say about that. I’m trying to be really brave and just allow myself to be a human and feel things.”
In 2022, Shawn Mendes canceled an international tour consisting of over 80 dates due to struggles with his mental health. He admitted to feeling “severely depressed” and not recognizing himself when stepping offstage. Despite finding beauty in the shows, he described feeling like “a shell — like talking to a wall.”
The 26-year-old star confessed to craving cigarettes and alcohol before performances, despite usually avoiding them to protect his voice. This desire for an escape contributed to his decision to cancel the tour before it spiraled into a more destructive path.
Shawn Mendes emphasized his commitment to breaking the cycle of self-destruction often faced by musicians, stating, “I was like, I’m not going to rewrite the same story that’s been written a thousand times by musicians and artists, where they can’t cope and they’d start taking more drugs, more alcohol, until it’s too much. I’m not doing that. I’m just going hard left.”
