The highly anticipated rematch between British boxing stars Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois has been scheduled, but doubts are surfacing about whether this epic showdown will proceed as planned. Let’s explore the latest updates and why this high-stakes fight could take an unexpected turn.
Scheduled date for Joshua vs. Dubois 2
Following their thrilling clash at Wembley Stadium, a rematch between Joshua and Dubois has been set for February 22, 2025. The event is part of Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh Season, a major series of entertainment events, and was confirmed by Turki Alalshikh, head of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority. However, with only a short time between matches, Joshua’s camp – led by promoter Eddie Hearn – has expressed concerns about the timing.
Concerns from Joshua’s team
Eddie Hearn did not hold back, describing the February rematch as “too soon, too fast.” According to Hearn, Joshua needs around 4–5 weeks of rest and recovery after his taxing match at Wembley. With the February date approaching, Joshua would have barely three weeks to train – a serious challenge for the 34-year-old, who suffered a knock-out loss to Dubois.
“We’re pushing for a May 2025 rematch,” Hearn said, adding, “and we need to evaluate carefully if February is even a realistic goal for Joshua.”
Dubois is ready for battle
In contrast, Daniel Dubois’s team is confident and fully prepared. Promoter Frank Warren declared that Dubois intends to defend his IBF title in February, whether or not Joshua is his opponent. Should Joshua be unavailable, Dubois will seek out another Top 5 contender.
Under IBF rules, Dubois has a nine-month window to defend his title against an opponent of his choosing; beyond that, he’ll face a mandatory challenger designated by the IBF. If Dubois retains his title in February, his next mandatory defense would fall around June 2025.
The rocky road ahead for both
Joshua faces rising pressure, both physical and psychological, following his KO loss. At 34, he’s at a crossroads, with some suggesting it may be time for him to retire or, at a minimum, take a substantial break before stepping back into the ring. Meanwhile, the 27-year-old Dubois, strong and determined, has his eyes set on an even bigger prize – a unification match against the winner of the Tyson Fury vs. Usyk rematch, slated for later this year.
This potential rematch will be crucial for both fighters. Joshua’s ultimate decision will shape not only his own career but could also significantly impact the entire heavyweight boxing division.
