Kevin Paredes: Rising Star at the Olympics and Beyond
Kevin Paredes’ potential was evident when he was signed by Jay-Z’s Roc Nation sports agency. Now, he’s shining on the Olympic stage, helping the U.S. men’s soccer team advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2000.
After scoring two goals in a 3-0 win against Guinea, U.S. coach Marko Mitrovic said, “This tournament could be a breaking point for him in his career.” The 21-year-old forward, who plays for Wolfsburg in Germany, joined Roc Nation’s roster in April, featuring world-class players like Vinicius Junior, Kevin De Bruyne, and Endrick. This seemed like perfect timing with the Copa America set to take place in the U.S., offering Paredes a chance to elevate his profile.
However, Paredes was left off then-coach Gregg Berhalter’s 26-man squad for the Copa America, and the Americans were eliminated at the group stage. “My goal was to play in Copa America, and I was going to do whatever it takes. I kind of let myself down not being part of the squad, but I knew the Olympics were coming and this could be a big opportunity for me,” Paredes said. “I’m really happy they gave me another chance to prove myself.”
Paredes, who can play as a left back or winger, is still establishing himself but was named USA’s young player of the year in 2023. He had broken into the senior national team before being left off the Copa squad. From South Riding, Virginia, Paredes came through D.C. United’s youth system before joining Wolfsburg in 2022 for $7.35 million. He made 29 first-team appearances last season, becoming a regular starter from January.
Against Guinea, Paredes became the second U.S. men’s player to score two goals in a game at the Olympics, following Rick Davis in 1984. “He has a lot of qualities and he’s always trying to be clinical,” Mitrovic said. “He’s playing in the Bundesliga, one of the top five leagues, and at a very good club. But I think he can establish himself as one of the best players in his club and maybe move to other top clubs in the future and play for our senior team as well.”
For now, Paredes is focused on the Olympics and helping the U.S. reach the semifinals. “I have high expectations for myself coming into this group,” he said. “I’m not looking too far ahead. Whatever way Mitrovic wants me to help the team, I’ll do whatever it takes to help this country win.”
Paredes’ journey from South Riding to the international stage showcases his determination and talent. Despite setbacks, he remains focused on his goals, using every opportunity to prove his worth. His story is one of resilience and ambition, making him a player to watch in the coming years. With the support of Roc Nation and his ever-growing experience, Kevin Paredes is set to make a significant impact both at the Olympics and in his professional career.
