De La Hoya Confirms Ryan Garcia’s Return but No Plans for Haney Rematch
In a recent statement, Oscar De La Hoya, the renowned promoter and founder of Golden Boy Promotions, confirmed that there are no plans for a rematch between Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney when Garcia returns to the ring in April after a year-long hiatus. De La Hoya expressed excitement about seeing Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) prepare for his comeback after a long break. He mentioned that there would be significant preparations for this fight, although Garcia’s opponent would not be Haney.
According to De La Hoya, Bill Haney, Devin Haney’s father, has publicly expressed a desire for a rematch with Garcia and has requested Ryan to participate in VADA drug testing. However, De La Hoya emphasized that a rematch with Haney is not part of the plans. This puts Devin Haney in a challenging situation as he may have to face several other dangerous opponents who might want to “finish the job” that Ryan started on April 20. “We haven’t talked about anyone yet. Nothing at all. Ryan is currently in the gym, looking great. He’s very eager for his return in April,” De La Hoya shared with Fight Hub TV.
Big Plans for Ryan Garcia
De La Hoya and the Golden Boy organizers need to be cautious when selecting an opponent for Ryan Garcia’s return fight. He warned against rushing Garcia into a risky matchup with top opponents like Teofimo Lopez or fighters who are smart and hard to hit. “I have big plans for Ryan that no one could think of,” De La Hoya said. “We’ve been discussing how to build his comeback for a long time. Everyone is eager to see this fight. He will return stronger than ever.” De La Hoya also noted that Ryan is very interested in challenging top fighters, and he can’t wait for his return day. “Ryan Garcia will be back in April. I can’t wait any longer. Oh my God, it’s going to be amazing,” he said.
