In the powerful new Prime Video documentary, Megan Thee Stallion: In Her Words, rapper Megan Thee Stallion opens up about her journey through grief, mental health challenges, and personal transformation.
Inspired from the memorizable
Inspired by the memory of her late mother, Holly Thomas, Megan offers a raw, behind-the-scenes look at her life as she processes the loss of her mother and former manager, who passed away from cancer in 2019, and confronts profound mental health struggles, including suicidal thoughts. The film also addresses the aftermath of the 2020 shooting involving Tory Lanez, who was recently convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison for the incident.
Reflecting on her mother’s influence, Megan shared at the film’s premiere at Hollywood’s TCL Chinese Theatre, “I know my mama was super outspoken and tough. When I found her voice in me, I knew it was time to show people who I really am.” Her mother’s outspoken nature and resilience clearly left a lasting impact, encouraging Megan to open up about her own challenges and emotions. Through this intimate portrayal, the documentary captures her not only as a global rap icon but as a person who has faced significant personal trials with resilience.
Documenting authentic voices and experiences
Director Nneka Onuorah, known for documenting authentic Black voices and experiences, admitted that Megan initially showed hesitance about filming. “Sometimes she’d skip filming,” Onuorah revealed, describing moments when they’d meet at unusual hours—like “3 a.m. in the studio”—to build trust and comfort. Onuorah explained, “I told her, ‘I’m here to support you as a woman, and I want your story told from your perspective.’” This understanding brought them closer, creating a level of vulnerability rarely seen from high-profile artists. Onuorah often served as both director and camera operator to capture the most personal moments of Megan’s life. “I was conscious of pushing her too far,” she added, explaining how she’d regularly check in with Megan. “Sometimes it was just linking up arm in arm and saying, ‘I got your back.’”
Produced by TIME Studios and Roc Nation in collaboration with Nneka Productions and presented by Amazon MGM Studios, the documentary had a special IMAX premiere at the TCL Chinese Theatre and 10 other IMAX locations in the U.S. The partnership between Amazon Prime Video and IMAX underscores the cultural impact of Megan’s story, giving fans the chance to witness her journey in an immersive format.
Now available on Prime Video, Megan Thee Stallion: In Her Words is a bold portrayal of Megan’s resilience and commitment to mental health advocacy, revealing the artist’s depth and courage in sharing her true self with the world.
