World number one golfer Scottie Scheffler clinched the Tour Championship title this morning, concluding the 2023-2024 season on the PGA Tour in the top position. The Tour Championship is the final event in a series of three playoff tournaments for the FedEx Cup (which includes the FedEx St. Jude Championship, BMW Championship, and Tour Championship). This series of tournaments marks the end of the golf season on the PGA Tour, equivalent to the significance of the Masters in tennis.
In the final round of the Tour Championship, Scottie Scheffler (USA) finished with a total score of -30, securing the championship. Former world number two Collin Morikawa (USA) placed second with a total score of -26, while American golfer Sahith Theegala came in third with a score of -24. The 2023 champion, Viktor Hovland (Norway), recorded a score of -15, finishing tied for 12th, while the 2022 champion, world number two Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland), finished with -16, placing tied for 9th.
The victory at the Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup playoff further highlights a remarkable year for Scottie Scheffler. Just a few weeks prior, he had won the gold medal (GOLD) at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in the men’s individual golf event. With the Tour Championship title, Scottie Scheffler earned a prize of $25 million, one of the highest payouts in the professional golf circuit.
More importantly, Scottie Scheffler has taken a significant step in competing with fellow countryman Xander Schauffele for the title of the best golfer of the year 2024, which will be announced at the beginning of 2025. Xander Schauffele secured two Major titles just before the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, marking the first Major victories of his career. Xander Schauffele also held the most recent Olympic gold until Scottie Scheffler claimed victory in Paris a few weeks ago.
