On October 24, Selena Gomez, 32, hosted her second annual fundraising event with a noble goal: to support mental health organizations for young people. This event not only served as a fundraiser but also created a strong connection among the participants.
Emotional Speech and Humorous Mix-Up
In her heartfelt speech at the event, Gomez didn’t hesitate to mention important charitable organizations, including Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services (DHMS), a leading entity in suicide prevention for adolescents.
“I am honored to work with such amazing change-makers,” Gomez shared with the crowd. However, when she said, “So, please welcome the executive director Diddy —,” she immediately realized her mistake.
“Not Diddy!” a spectator quickly commented, creating a light-hearted atmosphere. The singer of “Lose You to Love Me” promptly corrected herself: “Didi Hirsch,” and then continued to introduce other executives from DHMS. This small incident did not dampen the positive vibe of the evening.
Legal Troubles of Sean “Diddy” Combs
At the same time, Sean “Diddy” Combs is attracting attention in Hollywood due to serious legal troubles. The music mogul was arrested in Manhattan last month, and a 14-page indictment later accused Diddy of abuse, threats, and coercion against women “to satisfy sexual desires, protect his reputation, and conceal his actions.” Since then, he has pleaded not guilty to several serious charges, including extortion and sex trafficking by force.
A Successful Fundraiser
Aside from Gomez’s brief mix-up, the rest of the fundraising event went smoothly. In an interview with People, she revealed that the effort to “not isolate” is one of her key strategies for maintaining her mental health.
When launching Rare Beauty in September 2020, Gomez set a fundraising goal of $100 million for mental health services aimed at young people. To date, over $15 million has been raised toward this goal.
Closing Words from Selena Gomez
“This is probably the most important thing I do with my time, not just this event,” Gomez told People. “Every day, I show up for people. We have built a community with Rare, and I am very proud of that. I hope we have helped people feel less alone, and that is our ultimate goal.”
