In a recent interview, Charlie Puth shared that the emergence of HERO was directly influenced by encouragement from Taylor Swift.
He recounted that in April 2024, as Taylor was preparing to release her 11th studio album titled The Tortured Poets Department, a friend called him to inform him that Taylor had mentioned his name in one of the songs from this album. This information came to light because some tracks from Taylor’s new album had leaked on social media prior to the official release.
Initially, Charlie didn’t believe his friend since there was no confirmation. He shared: “My brain immediately switched to ‘Oh!’, like in an interview or something. That’s amazing. I love Taylor Swift.” Charlie even thought that the lyric his friend heard might have been generated by AI: “I thought I would wake up tomorrow and realize it was just a prank by someone who thinks I shouldn’t become a more successful artist.”
Overwhelming Emotions Hearing His Name in the Song
When The Tortured Poets Department officially launched, Charlie opened the Queen of Pop’s song while brushing his teeth before bed. Just as his friend had said, he couldn’t contain his emotions upon hearing Taylor Swift mention his name: “I was shocked. My first thought was: ‘Wow, she said my name and pronounced it like P-O-O-T-H. And I could only cry…’”
He added, “It’s strange because it’s never good to look back at the past, but I feel like I could have done things a little differently back then, but everything had to happen now.”
