Aryna Sabalenka’s Boyfriend, Former Hockey Star, Dies at 42
Former hockey player Konstantin Koltsov, partner of world No. 2 tennis star Aryna Sabalenka, has passed away at the age of 42 on March 18 in Miami, Florida. Koltsov was in Miami while Sabalenka was preparing for the Miami Open. Initially, the cause of death was not disclosed; however, after investigation, authorities confirmed that Koltsov had taken his own life.
A Career Spanning Belarus and the USA
Born in 1981 in Minsk, Belarus—the same hometown as Sabalenka—Koltsov’s hockey journey took him from Belarus to the Pittsburgh Penguins (USA) from 2002 to 2006 and later to Salavat Yulaev (Russia). Koltsov also represented Belarus in the Winter Olympics in 2002 and 2010. After retiring from active play, he took on a coaching role as an assistant at Salavat Yulaev.
Remembered by His Club
In a tribute, Salavat Yulaev expressed: “Konstantin Koltsov was a strong and joyful person. He was loved and respected by players, colleagues, and fans alike. He will always be remembered in our club’s history. May he rest in peace.”
Family and Relationship with Sabalenka
Koltsov leaves behind three children from a previous marriage. He and Sabalenka, who is 17 years younger, publicly confirmed their relationship in June 2021, with Koltsov often seen supporting her at tournaments. His passing has deeply impacted Sabalenka, who is set to play her first match since his death on March 22.
Sabalenka’s Own Loss and Career Milestones
This tragic event comes just five years after the death of Sabalenka’s father, Sergey, who passed away at 43 and was also a former hockey player. Sabalenka’s tennis career has been marked by remarkable achievements, including two Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open (2023 and 2024) and a runner-up finish at the US Open 2023. She reached the world No. 1 ranking at the end of 2023 and currently holds the No. 2 position behind Iga Swiatek.
