TVB’s ‘Forensic Heroes 6’ Disappoints Audiences
The sixth installment of the popular TVB series Forensic Heroes has left fans disappointed, with many criticizing the show for being dull and lacking focus on crime-solving.
The crime drama, which began streaming on the Chinese platform Youku on August 7, has received mostly negative reviews on Douban, a popular Chinese social media site. According to St Headline, early episodes have been criticized for featuring too many unnecessary romantic scenes, lacking the suspense and tension that fans expect from a detective series. The dialogue and plot have also been poorly received. Mtime, another review site, pointed out that lead actor Ron Ng, who plays an investigator, delivers irrelevant lines that have nothing to do with solving crimes. Moreover, key evidence is often obtained from bystanders rather than through meticulous crime scene analysis.
One user, Feitian, shared that they stopped watching after the first eight episodes because the storyline failed to engage them. They wrote on Douban: “The forensic doctor falls in love with someone who looks just like the person who abused her in her youth. After a subordinate dies, the superior takes the subordinate’s wife and children into his own home, and there’s a superstitious police officer… This show has everything except proper crime investigation.”
Many viewers expressed disappointment in how TVB has “ruined” their positive memories of the Forensic Heroes series. Comments on Weibo include: “Don’t bother watching, the quality is poor. It’s a shame for the brand, and I hope TVB doesn’t make another sequel,” “I had a bad feeling after seeing the trailer, but I didn’t expect the show to be even worse than I thought,” and “I thought they’d give up after the fifth season, but the more they make, the worse it gets.” Forensic Heroes 5, which aired in 2022, received a low score of 5/10 on Douban.
A small number of reviews described the show as “acceptable,” noting the cast’s solid performances and the lead actor’s good looks and charisma. The show was filmed from October 2023 and wrapped up after four months, featuring actors like Vincent Wong, Sisley Choi, Alice Chan, and Elena Kong.
Forensic Heroes is one of TVB’s most iconic series, with the first three seasons, released in 2006, 2008, and 2011, becoming a hit across several Asian countries thanks to its tight script, mysterious cases, and innovative investigative techniques. The show helped to cement the careers of stars such as Bobby Au-Yeung, Yoyo Mung, Frankie Lam, Kevin Cheng, Charmaine Sheh, Wayne Lai, Kate Tsui, Raymond Lam, and Maggie Cheung.
