Manchester United Unveils New Signings: Matthijs De Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui
Before officially joining United, De Ligt penned a heartfelt farewell to Bayern Munich: “I want to thank all the fans. I had two incredible years at this great club. Wearing the Bayern jersey was an honor. I’ll never forget the moments we shared, winning the Bundesliga and enjoying those unforgettable Champions League nights.”
He added, “It pains me to leave, but I will always remember the support from the fans, my teammates, and the staff. I wish Bayern the best of luck in winning more titles, as they always do.”
Last season, De Ligt struggled with form and lost his starting position to Kim Min-jae at Bayern, which also affected his role in the national team. He was benched throughout Euro 2024, not playing a single minute. In the early hours of August 14, Manchester United officially announced the successful signings of Matthijs De Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui.De Ligt joined Old Trafford for 45 million euros, while Mazraoui was secured for 15 million euros. Both contracts include additional clauses worth 5 million euros each, which Bayern Munich will receive if the players perform well in the future.
De Ligt has committed to Manchester United until 2030, while Mazraoui’s contract extends until 2028, with an option for a further extension.
Speaking about his move, De Ligt expressed his excitement: “As soon as Manchester United reached out, I was thrilled. I wanted to challenge myself at a club with such a rich history.”
Mazraoui also shared his enthusiasm: “It feels incredible to wear the Manchester United shirt. I can’t wait to play at Old Trafford in the iconic red jersey. Joining United at this moment is an exciting opportunity, and I hope to win many titles with the team.”
Reports from English media suggest that both defenders turned down offers from other major European clubs, opting instead to reunite with their former coach Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford
At Manchester United, De Ligt is expected to secure a starting spot, with hopes of forming a strong defensive partnership with Lisandro
Martinez. Mazraoui, on the other hand, will replace Luke Shaw, who is sidelined due to injury.
Following these signings, United is set to offload Victor Lindelof and Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Wan-Bissaka has already joined West Ham, while Lindelof has been given the freedom to find a new club this summer.
