English Football Manager Resigns Immediately After Opening Game of the New Season
Ryan Lowe has become the first manager in England’s top football leagues to resign during the 2024/25 season.
The 2024/25 English football season officially kicked off last weekend with the opening round of the Championship, the second tier of English football just below the Premier League. Known for its intense competition, the Championship quickly witnessed its first managerial departure.
Ryan Lowe, the head coach of Preston North End, stepped down after his team suffered a 0-2 defeat at home against Sheffield United.
Throughout the match, Lowe faced relentless boos from Preston’s home fans. His relationship with the Lilywhites supporters had been strained since the end of the previous season. Although Lowe had guided Preston into the playoff race for promotion, the team’s form collapsed as they lost the final five games, finishing 10th in the league. This disappointing end to the season fueled growing discontent among the fanbase.
Preston announced that the club and Ryan Lowe had reached a mutual agreement to part ways with immediate effect. Preston’s Director, Peter Ridsdale, revealed that the club’s management held a four-and-a-half-hour meeting with Lowe to explore potential solutions, but the 45-year-old manager was determined to resign.
Reflecting on his departure, Ryan Lowe stated, “I’ve had an incredible two and a half years at Preston, meeting some great people and coaching some fantastic players, but I feel now is the right time to move on.”
Lowe was appointed by Preston in December 2021 and led the club to finish 13th, 12th, and 10th over his two and a half seasons in charge.
