Tyson Fury Confident Ahead of Rematch with Oleksandr Usyk
Tyson Fury appeared at a press conference in London exuding confidence ahead of his rematch with unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk. Fury asserted that he only needs to make “a few small adjustments” to defeat his opponent in the crucial bout scheduled for December 21 at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Despite being considered the underdog, Fury (record 34-1-1, 24 KOs) believes he almost won the first fight in May, had it not been for the referee’s standing eight count in the ninth round.
Fury suggested that his failure to secure the win was due to him “clowning around” and losing focus. In the upcoming rematch, the 36-year-old Fury has vowed to change his strategy and take a more serious approach to facing Usyk, the WBA, WBC, and WBO champion. He admitted that, like Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois, he made the mistake of being overly aggressive against Usyk in the previous fight. This time, Fury plans to focus on jabbing, using feints, targeting the body, and avoiding the errors that cost him the previous fight.
Fury’s Strategy and Mindset Heading into the Rematch
Fury did not hide his excitement when discussing the rematch. He shared that, even after more than four years since being the underdog in his fight with Deontay Wilder 2, his fighting spirit remains strong. “I’m just looking forward to a fantastic fight. Last time in May, it was a fantastic fight. Oleksandr won fair and square,” Fury said.
Although he acknowledged Usyk’s deserved victory, Fury is confident that he can turn the tide in the rematch. His slick fighting style, focused on jabbing and movement, will be the key to securing a win. “All I need to do is make small adjustments. There’s no need to charge forward. Just focus on boxing,” Fury explained.
Fury also emphasized that he has no plans to change his training team despite the mistakes in the previous fight. With 40 undefeated bouts under his belt, Fury has full confidence in his current team, particularly in trainer Sugahill. “I wouldn’t change the team just because I made a mistake in round one. I like Sugahill, and I believe this fight will be easier than the last one,” Fury concluded with confidence.
