Rather than opting for traditional treatments like splinting and a lengthy recovery, the 30-year-old defender chose to remove the injured part of his finger. A silver medalist from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Dawson made this brave decision to secure his spot in Paris.
In an interview with 7NEWS, Dawson explained, “I made a well-considered decision with the surgeon, not just for the chance to compete in Paris but also for my future life. The best option was to cut off the fingertip. It’s a significant change, but I see it as an exciting challenge.”
Timely Decision-Making
With hockey being one of the first sports to compete in the Paris Olympics, Dawson had to act quickly. He recounted, “I called my wife, and she didn’t want me to rush my decision. But I felt confident that I had enough information to make it. I hope I won’t take too long to regain my form.”
Resilient Spirit
Despite the seriousness of his decision, Dawson maintains an optimistic outlook: “There are many other issues that others face in life that are far more severe than losing a finger. I’m fortunate that this is just a part of a finger.”
Support from Team Management
Colin Batch, the head coach of the Australian hockey team, praised Dawson’s bravery. He stated, “Dawson is back training and has certainly set a high standard for anyone facing a similar injury in the future. He is determined to compete in Paris.”
A Rocky Road
This isn’t Dawson’s first encounter with serious injury. Six years ago, he narrowly escaped losing an eye after being struck by a hockey stick. The son of Trish Dawson, a former Australian cricket player, he debuted for the Australian hockey team in 2014 and has participated in two previous Olympics: Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, where he helped Australia reach the finals but settled for a silver medal.
Heading to Paris 2024
Matt Dawson is set to be one of the first athletes to compete at the Paris 2024 Olympics, as Australia faces off against the Rio 2016 champions, Argentina, in their opening match on July 27. With his resilient spirit and strong determination, he aims to overcome this challenge and proudly represent his country on the Olympic stage.
